What’s in my water? Dry cleaning chemicals?
An article today shows how easily water can become seriously contaminated by a single business; in this case a dry cleaners. This case, which most likely resulted from inadvertent leakage, released naphthalene, benzene, perchloroethylene, trichloroethene and dichloroethene into the groundwater. At least one of these chemicals has been found in levels 460 times higher than the limit set by the State health department!
An important point to note is this, this contamination went unknown for years and was only found because the buyer of the building was smart enough to require an environmental survey before purchasing the land. How many gas stations, dry cleaners and other industrial facilities have leaked chemicals into the environment? What chemicals are you consuming in your drinking water?
