Summer is just around the corner, and we can all use a little extra sunshine! Get ready to fill up your Pure Water glass jar with distilled water, and pop in some tea bags. You’ll thank us later.
How to Make Sun Tea
What you’ll need:
- One gallon-sized glass jar with lid (we recommend our Pure Water glass jar. Cheap sun tea jars with spigots can harbor bacteria.)
- Fresh, distilled water from your Pure Water distiller
- 4-6 tea bags of your choice
Directions:
- First, make sure your jar and lid are clean. Wash with warm, soapy water before you brew your sun tea.
- Second, put 4 – 6 tea bags of your choice into the glass jar. More tea bags mean a stronger flavor, but you don’t need to go overboard.
- Third, fill with distilled water and cap. Distilled water makes a big difference! Read below to learn more.
- Fourth, place the jar in direct sunlight for 3 – 4 hours. You may need to move the jar to keep it in the sun.
- Finally, refrigerate your sun tea as soon as it’s ready, and keep it refrigerated. Then it will be nice and chilled for drinking on a hot summer day.
Why should you make your sun tea with fresh, distilled water?
1. Clean Taste & Pure Flavor
The best teas are carefully grown and mixed to have perfectly balanced flavor.
But what happens when you make them using tap water? The flavors can vary along with the pH. Plus, different contaminants, like chlorine, can make it taste “off.”
When you start with pure water that has a neutral pH, you have a blank slate to create your tea masterpiece. Get the full force of that flavor without pesky (or dangerous) contaminants getting in the way.
2. Increased Safety
Have you ever made sun tea and noticed that it got thick or ropey? That’s bacteria.
While the sun gets your tea hot enough brew in just a couple hours, it doesn’t get hot enough to kill bacteria. So if your water has bacteria in it beforehand, it will multiply when you make sun tea.
Good news though – distillation kills and removes all the bacteria that was in the water! (See our test results to learn what else we remove.) Your sun tea is safer with distilled water.
Note: for even more safety, you can also make “refrigerator tea.” All you have to do is add four or five tea bags to your jar of distilled water and leave it in the fridge overnight. Squeeze the tea bags when you remove them the next day, and serve! It takes a little longer, but it’s still yummy!
3. You Know Exactly What You’re Consuming
Most of us don’t really know what’s coming out of the tap. For example, did you know that many of us are consuming a credit card’s worth of plastic every week, with most of the pieces of plastic we ingest coming from drinking water?
That’s just the tip of the iceberg. (You can find out more about what’s in your tap water here, but remember that most utilities only test for a fraction of the contaminants that can be in water.)
With distilled water, you don’t have to worry about things like this! You’re in control. Your Pure Water distiller gives you clean, safe water, and you can pick the best tea for you and your family.
Bonus: Save Money!
The cost of a jug of pre-made tea usually costs around $3, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but it can add up! Making your own costs pennies on the dollar compared to the packaged kind.
Plus, with the purity of distilled water, you also don’t need to use as much tea to get the same flavor. In fact, you can use up to a third less tea with no noticeable difference!
