Immediately after the earthquake and tsunami hit the north east coast of Japan, officials in charge of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant insisted that they had things under controls and little radiation had escaped. The Japanese Government officials also played down the danger and the radiation levels.
The announcement that Tokyo drinking water was affected by radiation from the Fukushima accident was quickly rescinded the following day and the Mayor of Tokyo drank the water “proving” it was safe.
Quite early into the crisis, experts from outside Japan who had viewed aerial photographs of the damaged reactors claimed that the reactors sustained much more damage that the Japanese officials were letting on. As time went on the media buzz subsided. Other issues like the Libyan invasion took over the front page headlines. The Japanese nuclear crisis was no longer the headline issue.
Earlier this month, the TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power Co) officials confirmed that fuel rods in the #1 reactor had melted down within days of the tsunami, and today they announced the fuel rods at the plant’s #2 and #3 reactors also had melted down early in the crisis. So much for accepting the facts of the case when the media buzz is high.
It’s much easier to “face it” when the pressure is off. Is it dishonest? Maybe yes. Maybe no! Its possible that TEPCO and Government officials really did not know the full extent of the crisis. But why were foreign experts looking at the photographs so sure? Maybe they didn’t want to panic people or watch the Japanese economy crash. I doubt we will ever know the real facts.
The bottom line for you and I is this. We are being exposed to higher levels of radiation than before the Fukushima crisis and levels of radiation have increased in the air, food and water in the USA and elsewehere.
By the way, I only drinking distilled water made fresh each day with a Pure Water distiller. It is very effective in producing high purity water, and the distiller removes many radioactive contaminants from the water.
