Distilled water is the healthiest drinking water available for people, so it makes sense to provide it for your furry friends as well! The process of distillation is entirely natural. A water distiller gently boils tap water; clean, toxin-free steam rises, which then condenses and is collected. The brilliance of distilled water is that it mirrors the natural hydrologic cycle. If you are already giving your pet quality food and regular veterinary care, why wouldn’t you provide distilled water for dogs, cats, or your other pets?
Distilled Water for Cats & Dogs
Cats and dogs benefit from distilled water, just like humans. Consider all of the things that could be present in your tap water, such as chlorine, lead, nitrates, pesticides, viruses, bacteria, and much more. Most pet owners treat their dogs and cats like family. If your pet is experiencing inflammation or arthritis, and you have already switched to grain-free pet food, your pet may also enjoy the benefits of drinking distilled water as part of a healthy lifestyle. Did you know that some racehorses are given only distilled water? Secretariat is one example. While your dog and cat are not racehorses, surely they deserve the best!
Distilled Water for Other Pets
All kinds of pets benefit from drinking distilled water. Hamsters, guinea pigs, birds, rabbits, reptiles, amphibians, and even large animals like horses enjoy drinking distilled water. In fact, some farmers use distilled water for their animals because it is pesticide and toxin-free. If you check your local municipal water system’s website, you will find that tap water is often not recommended for babies, elderly or immune-compromised people. One reason tap water is not recommended for babies is due to their size and undeveloped immune systems. Because pets are also small, providing distilled water for them makes sense.
Distilled Water for Fish
Distilled water is the perfect water to start with for your fish or amphibious pets. Fish owners know that you need to have a basic understanding of water chemistry to keep fish healthy successfully. Also, some types of fish or corals are more sensitive than others. Water needs to have just the right amount of calcium, alkalinity, salinity, pH, magnesium, phosphate, ammonia, and the right temperature to grow coral.
Using distilled water for fish is like starting with a blank slate. You don’t need to worry about chlorine, fluoride, nitrates, lead, bacteria, or unknown chemicals or toxins that may be found in tap water. Because of this, it is easier to add in the right amount of minerals or to balance the pH of your water when starting with distilled water and also to top up. Please note that it is not recommended to put fish directly into freshly distilled water. A pump should be used to oxygenate the water or it should be oxygenated by shaking.
Some of Our Love Letters from Pure Water Distiller Owners
We’ve gotten so many “love letters” over the last 50 years from people using distilled water and falling in love with it for a variety of reasons, some of which we would’ve never guessed. For example, we had a worm breeder who said all of his worms were dying until he started using distilled water. Vets have contacted us over the years and have used distilled water for animals suffering from diarrhea due to too much sulfur in the water. Distilled water has gotten accolades from parakeet and parrot owners since it is devoid of chlorine and fluoride. A tropical fish owner reported that using distilled water helped him get rid of ich in his tanks. We’ve also gotten numerous letters from dog owners whose dogs experienced improvement from arthritis symptoms by drinking distilled water. While there are no scientific studies, and we can’t make health claims, we are so happy to know that people and pets are enjoying and benefitting from distilled water!
